The next day...and beyond
Field notes are written up giving an account of the day's work, including any surprises or problems that may have occurred.
Plankton samples are sorted. All the fishes are removed, identified and sorted into species and counted. The non-fish material (i.e. invertebrates) in the plankton sample is sent to the Australian Museum marine invertebrates section.
The data (ie. number of fish of each species from each tow) are entered into the computer and analysed. Results are written up into papers that will eventually be published in scientific journals.
Larval fishes are registered, with a unique registration number and put into the fish collection. As part of the Australian Museum fish collection these specimens and the associated information are then available for other scientists to use in their research.
