Woodland

Sydney Woodland. Photo: J Fields/Nature Focus

In sheltered valleys where winds alter the habitat by limiting the size of trees, woodland has developed. Superb Fairy-wrens Malurus cyaneus and Variegated Fairy-wrens Malurus lamberti can be found in the undergrowth. Eastern Yellow Robins Eopsaltria australis and Eastern Whipbirds Psophodes olivaceus can also be encountered in the undergrowth. The Red Wattlebird Anthochaera carunculata is a large honeyeater found in this habitat, along with the smaller Noisy Miner Manorina melanocephala. The Tawny Frogmouth Podargus strigoides may be seen during the day perching on a tree branch, often low down, camouflaged as part of the tree. The Laughing Kookaburra Dacelo novaeguineae may also be seen. Ashton Park, adjoining Taronga Park Zoo, and part of the Sydney Harbour National Park has a large area of the harbour woodland.
