Foreshores (includes mangroves and saltmarshes)

About the harbour foreshore are expanses of rocky flats and beaches. Pied Oystercatchers Haematopus longirostris, White-faced Herons Egretta novaehollandiae and Reef Herons Egretta sacra (the last occasionally on rocks about Sydney Heads) are fond of hunting here. The rock ledges also provide resting areas for birds feeding in the harbour's waters. One of the delights of the harbour is its Little Penguin Eudyptula minor colony. These birds are often encountered in the harbour and nest along the rocky foreshore. The foreshores also have large areas of mangroves and mudflats. Bicentennial Park has examples of both in which waterfowl and perching birds abound.
